I divide students into three groups with 4 students in each team. First of all I choose 4 students as captains of the «ship” then these 4 students should gather the teams. After that, all teams should choose the envelope with puzzles and collect it on the table (each puzzle has a picture of one country). Then they will be given flags of the country they have in the puzzle and picture of famous explorer from the same country. For every correct answer and completed task each team gets “money and coins” (not real) that I prepared for the lesson.

Rules of the lesson are in the bottle (as in the pirate stories in sea). I open it and read for students. “Imagine that you are young explorers and you have a map which can help you to find a lot of treasure. You should compete with explorers from other countries to get more treasure.

  1. The students are given the cards with information of explorers.

Jacques Cartier — Explorer (1491 — 1557)

You probably have heard of the country of Canada, just north of the United States. But do you know how it got its name? We have Jacques Cartier and the Iroquois people to thank. Cartier was an explorer from France who made several trips to North America in the 1500s.

Jacques Cartier was born in 1491 in France, just one year before Columbus sailed to the part of the world called the Indies, which is the Western Hemisphere. Kings and Queens in Europe during that time were sending explorers to look for gold, spices, and a faster way to get to Asia. Cartier was one of these explorers.

King Francis I sent Cartier to explore the northern part of the Americas in 1534 with two ships. This was the first of three trips that he would make across the ocean. He explored Canada’s coast, found some new lands like Prince Edward Island, and met with the Iroquois, a Native American people who lived there. Many Iroquois were farmers who grew pumpkins, corn, and beans, and they also hunted and fished.

Christopher Columbus (1451-1506)

Columbus didn’t want to sail to North America. In fact, before he left, he didn’t even know North America existed. About 500 years ago, Europeans thought that the only other continents were Asia and Africa, since nobody had been to the Americas (or to Australia or Antarctica). Columbus wanted to land in India, not North America, because it was a source of riches like spices, silk, and gems.

Previously, Europeans had to sail all the way around Africa to get to India, and Columbus thought there was a better way. However, just because you have a good idea doesn’t mean that everyone will believe you.

Columbus had the idea of sailing across the Atlantic to reach India, but he couldn’t convince the richest Europeans to give him the money to prove it. He asked kings and queens and leaders of nations like Portugal, Venice, and Genoa. Finally, he went to the Spanish queen, Isabella and persuaded her to give him three ships for a voyage, or great journey. These ships were called the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria.

Francis Drake

His true date of birth is unknown, but many people believe that Sir Francis Drake was born between 1540 and 1544 in Devonshire, England. His parents were Protestant farmers, and Drake was the oldest of 12 sons. Can you imagine growing up with 11 brothers? As you will learn, Francis Drake grew up to be a tough sea navigator or explorer, and maybe his childhood had something to do with that!

Francis Drake’s first taste of sea life came when he sailed the waterways between England and France trading goods as a merchant. Then, at the age of 23, he took a job as a privateer, or armed ship officer, who had the right to capture enemy ships. For the next several years he sailed off the coast of France seizing other merchant ships. Then, in 1560, he began sailing ships with his cousin into Africa to illegally capture slaves. During one of these voyages, he was cornered by Spanish forces, and several of his crew members were killed. The experience left Drake with a hatred for the Spanish and a desire for revenge…

In 1580 he was the first sailor to complete a voyage around the world as captain of the ship! Only one man—Ferdinand Magellan—had attempted the same feat before Drake; however, Magellan died before completing the trip.

  1. Grammar

The present continuous (also called present progressive) is a verb tense which is used to show that an ongoing action is happening now, either at the moment of speech or now in a larger sense. The present continuous can also be used to show that an action is going to take place in the near future.
